How to Pick a School

Karate is a word that is thrown around and misrepresented all over the world (example: Taekwondo is a sport martial art and not karate. No sport martial arts are karate but rather are in most cases, Karate Do (Do is a religion); whereas, Karate Jutsu was the original form of self-defense.

Ninety percent of all schools are Sport Karate Do and 10 percent are true Karate. Can Sport Karate, Judo, etc. be used for self-defense? Yes, but is soccer, baseball, football, etc., intended for sport or self-defense? I will list some major differences and you decide what you want.

Please remember Sport Karate and Karate Jutsu are as different as day and night.

If you take your son and daughter to Okinawa and they practice in the 90 percent Sport Karate group, what happens? They are asked their style; then in many cases they are told things like Goshin means self-defense and it isn’t a recognized style. Their rank, their style, their school isn’t accepted. If you spent $40,000 for your child to go to a fake university and their diploma was worth toilet paper, would you be upset? Why are Americans accepting fake ranks, fake styles, fake schools, fake diplomas, and worst of all a false idea of security that they can defend themselves?

Every visit I made to Okinawa and Japan was filled with laughter at the names of the schools’ styles in my area. The Grandmaster gets upset with all the fake schools and ranks people make up.

If your child’s school is legitimate, ask for a phone number, address or email of the Grandmaster in Okinawa, Japan or China. Please do buy “They are all Dead and I am the Sole Survivor.”

SPORT KARATE

1. No accreditation is needed for the school.

2. No accreditation is needed for the teacher.

3. No accreditation is needed for the style.

4. They can change all the techniques that were meant for self-defense, so to soften them for tournaments.

5. They can claim any rank (real or fake).

6. They can claim any title (real or fake).

7. Goal is to sell classes and equipment.

8. They accept no responsibility for teaching a child not to use fighting techniques on family, friends or siblings.

9. Their proof is in quantity of students and trophies.

10. They can make up fake katas and change original weapons to fake weapons.

PROBLEMS WITH SPORT KARATE

1. School probably isn’t accepted in Okinawa, Japan, or China.

2. Instructor’s rank comes from his students or friends and isn’t awarded from Okinawa, Japan, or China.

3. Students may not be able to have their rank accepted in Okinawa, Japan or China.

4. Many diplomas and ranks are Kinko’s produced versus an original-traditional oriental school or university.

5. People believe trophies prove ability to defend themselves.

6. Karate Do (Sport Karate) was created in the 1920s and 1930s to get more people involved and make “more money.”

7. The true meaning of Karate -- Kata -- weapons is lost and students only want to train in what they like instead of what they need.

TRADITIONAL KARATE

1. Most schools are associated with Okinawa, Japan or China.

2. Most schools are licensed to teach--after a thorough examination.

3. Instructor’s rank is certified by an Oriental governing body and the government of the country--example: Okinawa.

4. School’s qualifications and instructor’s rank are reviewed regularly.

5. No changes are allowed to soften training, karate, katas, weapons, or sparring and the knowledge of what the techniques are and mean must be maintained.

6. No self promotion (America has more self-promoted 10th Dans than Okinawa; China and Japan have real 10th Dans)

7. No fake system--50% or more of all American schools are made up (fake)

8. We insist on good moral character.

9. We insist on self-defense over winning trophies.

10. We do not practice Karate Do (Do is a religion)

11. Winning trophies at a tournament doesn’t prove legitimacy.

12. Traditional Karate is real Karate--Sport Karate is a fake and should change its name.

13. We respect all sports, including Sport Karate.

14. Traditional Karate is for lifelong learning--Sports are for a season.

15. Traditional Karate teaches self-defense. If protecting yourself isn’t your primary goal and trophies are, you are studying modified system.

16. 90% of traditional Black Belts train a lifetime--10% or less of Sport Karate Black Belts last past 10 years.
