As a teenager I made myself three promises:
1. I would be Airborne; 2. I would get a black belt in Karate;
3. I would learn to play the banjo. I succeeded on the first
two, but, all I can do with a banjo is strum some cords and
a few songs, I was never able to get my fingers to move as they
should.
I spent 22 years in the military and retired. I was with the
Special Operations and had three tours of duty in Viet Nam.
It was during my initial training in the Commandos that I had
my first exposure to the Martial Arts and that only tended to
whet my appetite for more.
My instructors have all been Okinawan with the exception of
one.
1. Oyata Sensei
2. Shimabuku Sensei
3. Toma Sensei
4. It was here that I settled down with Kise Sensei and Hohan
Soken. I was stationed in Okinawa from 1965 to 1967 and was
lucky enough to have been there while Kise Sensei was going
through his training with Hohan Soken. Our classes were Shorinji
and later, when Sensei Kise got his sixth dan that the class
was called Shorin/Shorinji Do. We got a lot of both during our
classes.
5. This was a retired British Marine Commando by the name of
"Pop" O'Neal who spent 40 years in the Shaolin Temple
in China. It was he who really opened my mind up as to what,
where, and how I was doing something in the katas. A truly remarkable
man, he reminded me a lot of Hohan Soken, he was 72 years old
and was using me and one other to come up with "Quick Kill"
and Dirty Fight" techniques, which we taught to the civilian
part of the military and the Special Operations branches of
the services.
I opened my first dojo in Alexandria, Louisiana in 1967 and
taught the class just as I was taught in Okinawa. I lost a lot
of students through the years for refusing to change my teaching
and to ease up on the students. The ones who stuck it out are
still teaching today, (not many), and they teach it just as
I did, which makes me know that the old way is the best way.
I earned my San Dan on 13 November 1966, just before I left
Okinawa; and under Bushi Dr. Kenneth Balliet, I received my
Judan, "Hanshi", on 10 March 2006. I have been in
"Who's Who in Karate” twice. Through all of what
I have done, there is not a doubt in my mind that without the
Martial Arts training and my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, I
would not be here today. shorinji65@yahoo.com |

I started martial arts at the age of 6. Now, 24 years later,
I feel I am getting better every day.
My first instructor was Master Kim, followed by Mike Redman,
who both taught Tae kwon do Karate. Tae kwon do is more sports
oriented, and I enjoy competition. However, now I am more self-defense
oriented.
I earned a brown belt in Ju Jitsu under Dave Mackowiser, Ni
Dan under Sensei Redman, and now I am 6th Dan under Bushi Dr.
Kenneth H. Balliet. Contact me at (570) 327-8645.
